As a Police Recruiter, I have experienced firsthand the amazing feeling of hiring someone who makes it through the police academy, does well during their field training, and then goes on to do awesome things for both your department and your community.  It’s a really easy feeling to get caught up in and want to repeat over and over again. 🙌

You wanna know where you can also get that same, just as good, incredibly satisfying feeling from? Keep reading! 👀

Hey everyone, it’s Tom Sye your Police Marketing FTO, and this week, we’re talking about something that no one really talks about and that is the hiring of civilian applicants within your agency and why you should be giving them just as much of the attention as you do sworn Police Officers. 🤩

When you work in police recruiting, especially if you are a current Police Officer, it is easy to get wrapped up in the hiring of Police Officers.  Typically, this is where the most pressure to hire people is at and it’s not that you think any less of civilian applicants, it’s just that you’re a cop…you wanna hire more cops.  I get it. 🤷‍♂️

But here are three things that I’ve learned over the past decade about hiring civilians that should make you start seeing them in a more rewarding light...

1.   They’re really good people too

Sure, agency standards between sworn and civilian may be more lenient in some places, but that doesn’t mean you’re hiring just anybody off the street.  There are still testing processes and background investigations that civilian employees must go through to vet them out and make sure they’re not the kind of person who is going to do nefarious things or take advantage of the confidential information they will be privy to.  🦹‍♂️🦹‍♀️

At the end of the day, civilian employees are just as every bit committed to serving their community as Police Officers are…they just do it in a different way.  They have true hearts of service, are kind and caring people, and truly want to do their part in improving things…however that may be. 🤗

When you take the time to get to know them, you’ll find that out and actually see, they’re pretty cool people who also have the power and desire to positively impact people’s lives daily. 💪

2.  Getting this job means just as much to them

Remember when you got hired on as a Police Officer and thought about that great salary, stability, benefits, retirement, and the fact that you can now take care of yourself and your family.  Well, civilian employees go through that same exact thought process.  Getting a job with your agency is a big deal to them too. 😁

Whether it’s just getting started with their first job after college, taking a position to get their foot in the door, or accepting the position they’ve been striving for, civilians are just as happy, just as proud, just as ambitious, and just as impacted by the great benefits their job provides to them.  😎

Never lose sight of that…this job is just as life changing for them as it was for you. 💯

3.  You’ll be just as happy hiring them

One of the best things a recruiter experiences is seeing someone they hired later walking around the halls, or in the lunchroom or wherever you bump into them.  If they’ve had a good experience with you during the hiring process, they’re going to be so excited to see you and then fill you in on everything that’s been going on in their lives or with their position. 🗣️

These interactions are so rewarding and will fill you up with just as much joy as watching one of your sworn hires receive a life saving award or make a big arrest…trust me! 😊

Look, don’t get caught up in the 'I’m a cop so I only have cop friends' nonsense that so many of us on the sworn side live our lives by and start seeing your civilian applicants as the living, breathing, human beings that they are…full of the same goodness, ambition, desires, and life pressures that you have, and you’ll be rewarded more than you can ever imagine by hiring them. 😎

That’s what being in this line of work is all about after all.  Just because you’re not out there on the street anymore doesn’t mean you can’t have a major impact in someone’s life. 👍
