Hey everyone, it’s Tom Sye your Police Marketing FTO, and this week, we’re talking about police recruiting’s secret weapon and how you can start using it to attract more police officer applicants to your agency! 🤫

Things have come a long way since I started this Police Marketing Revolution a little over a year ago and I’m so happy to see so many agencies implementing what I’ve been teaching and starting to get themselves recruiting like it’s 2024.  It really has been awesome to see. 🙌

But…there are still some stragglers out there who like to continue making social media posts that feature the backs of people’s heads and super serious stoic faces.  So, with that being said let me introduce you…or re-introduce you if you’ve been following me for a while, to police recruiting’s newest secret weapon…smiles. 😁

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times…no one wants to work at a place where everyone is miserable and when you feature those super serious, mean, stoic faces in your social media posts or ads…that is exactly what you are showing…whether it’s actually that way at your agency or not! 😒

Smiles, on the other hand, equate happiness, and trigger very subtle and subconscious, but super powerful connections in your potential applicants minds that people are happy when they work for you.  🧠

Here’s three areas you can start focusing on to deploy some smiles for big results...

Area number 1:  Social Media

This should come as no surprise to you, but if it does, that’s ok too…we’ll get you turned around…but social media is the recruiting table of 2024, and this is not going to be changing for a long while.  You need to have a consistent presence here if you have any hopes of filling those vacancies of yours. 📲

Getting started is easy.  You create a post, make a caption for it, put it up on the site.  Tomorrow, do the same thing.  The next day…repeat the steps again.  The day after that…well, you get what I’m saying. 👍

Now…when you’re thinking about your police recruiting posts for the week, you want to make sure that you’re showing a variety of people, doing a variety of things…but the one thing they should all have in common?  They should be smiling. 😄

Again, this triggers feelings of happiness and satisfaction…and when people think that people are happy and satisfied when working for you…they’re more likely to apply there. 💯

Area number 2: Recruiting Materials

This is another huge opportunity for you to separate yourself from the rest with some good old-fashioned smiles. 🦄

Look, that recruiting video with the super slow-motion footage of the SWAT team moving through the smoky building looks cool…but that’s not winning you any new applicants.  People interested in that kind of stuff were already going to apply for you no matter what you do. 🤷‍♂️

That billboard with the ‘join the best’ or ‘come see if you have what it takes’ messaging is missing the mark because most normal human beings simply see themselves as your every day average type of person. 🤯

What you need is smiling faces.  Smiling faces that tell stories of what this job means to them and how fulfilled they are in helping their community. 🤗

Area number 3: Police Testing

Here is another area a lot of agencies are missing opportunities in because they’re trying to look super sharp in their Class A uniforms or running around yelling and screaming at everyone to lineup and move from here to there or whatever. 😡

Hey, I get it.  You’re proud of your uniform and are trying to show applicants that the uniform is the standard.  But all you’re really doing by showing up like that, is making people nervous.  Same thing with the theatrics of hollering at everybody. 😨

Your testing applicants are nervous enough already.  If you want them to do well…engage with them, encourage them, laugh and joke with them, and most importantly…wear your Class A smile so you don’t lose them to another agency who is being far more welcoming. 😉
