Have you been disabling the comments on your police recruiting social media posts?  😳

I can’t blame you… who wants to put up with all that negativity and unfair abuse by keyboard warriors who have nothing better to do than harass you, right?  Well, if you have been doing it, I’m here to tell you why disabling the comments on your social media posts is really only disabling your police recruiting...keep reading! 👀

Hey everyone, it’s Tom Sye your Police Marketing FTO, and this week, we’re talking social media comments and more specifically the act of disabling them on your police recruiting posts.  This practice is becoming more and more common as of late and is really prevalent on LinkedIn, but I’ve seen it quite a bit on Facebook too. 🖥️

Here’s the bottom line on it…I totally get why you would want to disable comments on your social media posts, I really do. I’ve been on the receiving end of some really foul and disgusting comments on my agency page too.  I’ve gotten fifteen notifications, clicked on them, and saw they’re all from the same person bad mouthing your agency of fifteen different posts.  It’s not a great feeling. 😔

But shutting them down is shutting down your recruiting and here are the three main reasons why you should always keep your comments open on your police recruiting social media posts...

1. It makes you look like you’ve done something wrong.

When you close your comments down there is a feeling you are not being transparent, you are not willing to be held accountable, and you’ve got something to hide.  This is especially true after an incident at your agency has made news headlines but can also be the perception on simple everyday posts as well. 📰

You want to show your audience and more importantly your applicants that you are steadfast as an agency and stand behind what you say and post on social media.  By keeping your comment section open you quietly signal that you welcome input from everyone and that no matter what their opinion is of you or how bad they treat you in their comments…your agency will be there regardless when they need you. 💯

2. Comments help get your posts seen by more people.

I’ve talked about this before and I’m going to do it again because this is an incredibly important point for you to realize…there is no such thing as a bad comment in the eyes of a social media algorithm.  The algorithm is what controls who sees your posts and how often, and when people are liking, sharing, or most importantly commenting on your posts the algorithm sees that post as interesting and shows it to more people. 🚀

So, when someone makes a comment, whether it’s positive or negative, you should simply think to yourself…thank you…thank you for the free algorithm boost that is enabling my post to be seen by more people who likely won’t even see or read that comment. 🙌

3. Creates a relationship building environment

Ok…I’ve saved the best one for last and this is by far the most important reason as to why you should have your comment section open on every single social media post that deals with police recruiting…it enables you to start building a relationship with a potential candidate. 😍

Every ‘I’m interested’, ‘I’m getting my application in’, ‘where do I apply’, and ‘when’s the deadline’ type comments give your agency an opportunity to interact with your applicants and start building trust with them.  Trust that when they ask a question (aka have a problem later when they’re working for you) you’ll be there for them. 👍

If you have your comments limited or disabled, this critical element of the recruiting process cannot take place and your applicant will become someone else’s new hire.  Keep your comments turned on for everyone. 😎
